A former sand pit belonging to the transport ministry, acquired by the municipality in 1982, turned into a play area of about 150 hectares. It holds one of the last major wooded areas in the Montérégie, with roughly thirty tree species, more than 140 plant species and even a food forest. Walking trails in summer, skating, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in winter, all within biking distance of nearly every street in town.

Local colour

Potato country

The sandy soil around here long made Saint-Amable a potato kingdom, with asparagus as a bonus crop. A pest outbreak in 2006 dealt growers a hard blow, but the crop has taken root again in recent years and farmland still frames the residential core. Drive out of your street and, two minutes later, you're rolling between the fields.

Le Rocher is also the town's sporting heart: three baseball diamonds with bleachers and scorer's booths, soccer fields, a bocce court and picnic areas scattered between the fields. Amateur leagues play here all summer, and for a town this size, the quality of the facilities surprises quite a few visitors.

Access

Highway 30 close by, Highway 20 not far either

No highway crosses through the town itself, and that's just fine for the quiet. Exit 128 off Highway 30 is a few minutes away, chemin de la Belle-Rivière connects the village to Sainte-Julie and Highway 20, and downtown Montreal sits about thirty kilometres off. The Varennes and Boucherville employment hubs, meanwhile, are practically next door.

Family life

Village schools and a spirit posted on the fences

Four elementary schools and François-Williams high school, all under the Centre de services scolaire des Patriotes, let kids go through their whole schooling without leaving town. And the sign posted at Parc Le Rocher sets the tone: "These are kids. It's a game." This is a town growing with its families, and you can feel it right down to the bleachers.

Transit

The exo bus straight to the metro

Exo lines 731 and 732 connect Saint-Amable to the Longueuil terminus on weekdays, during rush hour, with the yellow metro line right at the end of the platform. The rest of the time, the sector's on-demand taxibus takes over. For anyone working downtown, it means leaving the car in the driveway without giving up the big lot.

A country festival and thirteen neighbourhood parks

Every summer, the country festival brings Parc Le Rocher to life, a worthy successor to the potato festival that was long the local pride. The rest of the year, thirteen neighbourhood parks, the bocce court and the winter skating rinks keep everyone outside. It's the kind of place where you end up knowing your neighbours, whether you meant to or not.

Character

A village that became a town, without losing its nature

A parish born in 1913, a municipality in 1921, Saint-Amable has only carried the title of town since 2019. Its name honours abbé Amable Prévost, a Beloeil parish priest in the early 19th century, and its roughly 13,000 residents are called Amabliens. Many people arrive here for the same reason: a real lot, a quiet street and a reasonable entry price on the outer south shore, without giving up access to services.
