The REM

The REM, in service since May 2026

In service since May 18, 2026, the Kirkland station, the highest on the whole REM network, perched about 24 metres up, connects Jean-Yves Street to Central Station in about thirty minutes. There's no park-and-ride here: you get to it on foot, by bike, or on the 211 bus.

The safe bet

The kingdom of the single-family home

Built mostly between the 1960s and 1980s, south of the Trans-Canada Highway, Kirkland remains the kingdom of the detached single-family home: condos are rare here, and plexes are almost nonexistent. On the island of Montreal, a residential profile this consistent doesn't come around often.

About thirty parks across 9.6 km²

About thirty landscaped parks, open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., across barely 9.6 km²: here, greenery isn't a selling point, it's the default backdrop. Special mention to the Parc des Bénévoles and its chalet, rentable from April to November, a name that says everything about the spirit of the place.

Active living

Pools, an arena, and a triple gymnasium

Three community pool and water play sites, Brunswick, Lantier, and Hymus, plus a sports complex with an arena, a triple gymnasium, and a municipal library. As an independent related municipality, Kirkland runs its own recreation services, and families feel it every day.

School in both languages

Kirkland is served by the Centre de services scolaire Marguerite-Bourgeoys on the French side and the Lester B. Pearson School Board on the English side, a real asset for bilingual West Island families. Add to that Kuper Academy, a private school from preschool to high school, on a 6.5-acre campus.

Everyday life

The RioCan hub and its movie theatre

Centre RioCan Kirkland, at the corner of Sainte-Marie Road and Highway 40, has lined up about 219,000 square feet of retail since 1999, and it's the hub where the REM lands. Right next door, Cineplex Cinema Kirkland, which locals still call "the Colisée," was still running in 2026.

Heritage

A name, a trailblazer

Incorporated in 1961, the city honours Dr. Charles-Aimé Kirkland, member for Jacques-Cartier. That December, his daughter Marie-Claire Kirkland-Casgrain succeeded him, the first woman elected to the Quebec legislature, then the first woman named minister. Living in Kirkland means carrying a piece of Quebec history in your address.
